How important are advances in material technology to your R&D?
Materials guys aren’t going to like this, but there haven’t been a lot of new materials lately, just variations on a theme. If anything has happened in materials that allows us to make a bike lighter, it’s lower aerial weight prepregs with zoomy fibers in them—HS 40 or HR 40—high modulus, high-strength fibers. The primary reason those materials are available to us is because of the composites golf shaft industry. The golf shaft segment is so big and they’re consuming so much material that they were able to make the prepreggers start making new materials that then allowed bike guys to start making some really lightweight, high-performance style bikes.
