Initiatives by the U.S. government should aid in the advancement of composites in utilities. The U.S. Department of Energy and other agencies have established mandates to harden the grid against storms and natural disasters, improve reliability and utilize more environmentally-friendly products.
“This is an exciting new field,” concluded Holmes. “And it’s starting to gain traction.”
ACMA’s Utility & Communication Structures Council promotes the use and understanding of composite poles and crossarms for electrical distribution, transmission and communication structure applications. It is currently working on a Standard Specification for FRP Composites Utility Poles that will be submitted to ANSI this fall. In addition, the council created a white paper entitled “Making the U.S. Electric Infrastructure More Reliable & Resilient to Severe Weather Events Through Increased Composites Usage.”
