During a Dec. 13 press conference from the demonstration area at the CAMX 2017 exhibit hall, Composites One announced an exclusive distribution agreement of Hammerhead™, PolyOne’s new line of continuous-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic sandwich panels for the marine industry.

“Hammerhead Marine Composite Panels are a real innovation,” said Composites One President and COO Leon Garoufalis. “Compared to plywood, they weigh more than 50 percent less, providing boat manufacturers with a lighter, more efficient alternative to traditional marine construction materials.”

Beyond weight reduction, Hammerhead panels can improve installation and labor productivity because they replace the typical wood, hand lay-up and vacuum assisted process with a consolidated, ready-to-install panel. Applications range from structural to cosmetic in areas such as bulkheads, decking, ceilings, hatches, covers, cabinetry, fittings, transoms and stringers.

Hammerhead Marine Composite Panels consist of thermoplastics, continuous glass-fiber face sheets, and foam cores. This configuration brings unique characteristics such as improved bondability to various surfaces, enabling thermal lamination to different materials and finishes for increased design flexibility compared with traditional assembly methods.

“Boat builders now have an innovative alternative based on strong, lightweight thermoplastic materials that can remove multiple production steps for better quality and economics,” said Matt Borowiec, general manager, PolyOne Advanced Composites.

The CAMX press briefing also unveiled details about of workshops available to the composites industry in 2018. The workshops, offered by IACMI, Composites One, the Closed Mold Alliance and Magnum Venus Products, provide hands-on experience in composite manufacturing for workers who are interested in gaining experience utilizing composite manufacturing technology. The Closed Mold Alliance is a resource dedicated to helping manufacturers make a successful conversion to closed mold and other advanced processes. The Closed Mold Alliance Workshops are held four times annually at IACMI partner locations across the United States, and are open to employees of IACMI members and non-member organizations.

The workshops are designed to help participants become more adept in advanced and closed mold processing, out-of-autoclave production, additive manufacturing, lightweighting of products, prototyping, selecting systems and equipment, advancements in composites and high-performance materials, data acquisition, modeling and simulation.
