Last week, Portuguese graphene manufacturing company Graphenest and Sipre, a Portuguese kayak manufacturer, announced that they have produced what they believe to be the world’s lightest surfski, which weighs approximately 20.5 lbs (9.3 kg).

The 5.75-meter surfski kayak was revealed during Graphenest’s presentation at last month’s Techstars Autonomous Technology Accelerator event in Boston, which was attended by 500 people including senior representatives from the U.S. Air Force.

“This engineering accomplishment was enabled by substituting the ordinarily used epoxy resin by Graphenest’s HexaBond epoxy resin system for fiber reinforced composites,” Graphenest wrote. “HexaBond can be applied in any fiber reinforced composites to improve mechanical strength, durability and chemical resistance. Hexabond is able to increase the strength of carbon fiber composites up to 24%, while simultaneously reducing weight by 10%.”

According to Graphenest, HexaBond targets a $7 billion market as an epoxy resin for automotive and high-performance sporting goods.
